Getting the most out of shooting videos-A beginners guide

Shooting Video

When shooting video, it is essential to consider how you are going to edit/going to get it edited. These few tips will make the editing job easier and make your product look more professional. Since the editor will have good footage, their job becomes easier and you will get your product faster, cheaper and cleaner.

Plan your shots: Storyboard (see storyboard on the right)

Not only will this clarify your mind on what you want to shoot. It also gives you a visual map of what is going to happen on the scene. This way you do not end up shooting haphazardly. The storyboard also accommodates notes, which will remind you of the essentials. Feel free to modify it to your needs

Lighting

Take a look at this fantastic video on lighting to get an idea of how to go about it:

Lighting

Getting the shot

When shooting, give the presenter or scene at least 3 seconds of recording after the “Action call”. In other words do not have the speaker start talking immediately, advise them to start 3 seconds after the action call.5 seconds is even better. This gives the shot a clean start without the director and speaker overlapping. Do the same for the end. Let the camera record for 5 seconds after you have shot what you want.

Shooting direction

Try to be consistent in which direction you move your camera. If you move left to right, try to maintain this on each scene. Exceptions are when you shoot an interview with two people and you would like a back and forth effect.

Tripod

Wherever possible, use a tripod to steady your shot. Tripods are cheap and they make a huge difference in capturing scenes. Let us face it; the era of shaky home videos is well over. It is rather counter productive to invest in an HD camera and then unintentionally shoot shaky videos.

Naming your Footage

The worst nightmare for an editor is badly named files for editing. Work out a chronological system if you are going to have several video clips put together. An example can be 1_mymovie.mov, 2_mymovie.mov etc. In the long run, good documentation will save you time when searching for particular footage. It is also a good idea to create a folder specifically for your videos which you can then add subfolders to. This can be by genre, for example,Home,Travel videos,Birthdays, etc.

I hope you find this hub useful.Your feedback will be most appreciated.

I needed this hub last year when I had to shoot a video for a 'team exercise' competition at work! Thankfully we won but I think if we'd have had your information it would have been much easier! I'll know for next time though - good hub.

Hey Victor, good hub (I think) I've only had a video camera in my hands maybe twice and it was a pain in the ass for me. I've used still camera's for so many years that I'm just way more comfortable with them. I'll leave the video to you. Nice work! Peace!! Tom

@ Temirah. Sorry I could not put it up any earlier.I am sure you will work with video again in the near future,it is becoming one of the most sort after marketing avenues. Thanks for passing by.

@justom. I understand your frustration. The good news is that the new video cameras are basically point and click too, the only diference is the moving image. They are becoming cheaper too so you might want to invest in one with a tripod, that should get you going. We need to see that mugshot in motion!

justom 10 months ago

Haaa! It's that motion part that was tricky for me. I always needed to SLOW down, Just too herky jerky. I have 2 tripods for my still cameras and Justin has a video camera so maybe I'll try again. That mugshot nobody wants to see especially in motion :-P Take care! Tom
